Engineers are always on the search for simplicity. Some might say this is not absolutely true, and well, sometimes they're right. But in these cases we promise it's just a matter of having fun. Usually, more convenient devices are preferred...
Current 3D imaging requires to make use of markers along scanned surface, such as reflectors to track the position, a minimum infrastructure to "guide" the device, or at least to perform the scanning in certain (and restricted) steps... and inaccurate results may follow!
NavOScan is a project initiated by the Fraunhofer IPA (Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation) in order to develop a mobile navigation system for 3D scanners. From now on, it doesn't matter where and how we take our "3D pictures", as NavOScan will put all the information together to build a corrected model (by means of a visual and inertial sensor, as well as a powerful software).
The engineer Bernhard Kleiner took his time at Electronica 2012 to introduce this amazing development to Wisse and the Elektor.TV crew, which will be implemented in about two years by most European manufacturers.
